Flu (influenza) is a common but unpredictable viral infection. For most people it clears up on its own, but it can cause serious illness — and complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia — particularly in older adults, pregnant women, young children and people with certain long-term health conditions.
The flu vaccine helps your immune system recognise and fight the flu viruses expected to circulate this winter. It reduces your risk of catching flu and of becoming seriously ill if you do — though, like any vaccine, it cannot guarantee that you will never catch flu.
Because flu viruses change over time and the strains in circulation vary each year, the vaccine is updated and offered every flu season. Having it in the autumn helps protect you through the winter months when flu spreads most.
What is the COVID-19 vaccine?
COVID-19 is an illness caused by the coronavirus. Most people recover well, but it can cause serious illness in some people, especially older adults and those with a weakened immune system.
The COVID-19 vaccine helps your body build protection and reduces the risk of becoming seriously ill or needing hospital care. It does not mean you can never catch COVID-19, but it lowers the chance of serious complications.
Protection can fade over time and the virus continues to change, so seasonal doses are offered to the groups most at risk to top up their protection before winter.

NHS vaccinations — who is eligible?
NHS flu and COVID-19 vaccinations are free of charge, but only for patients who meet the current NHS eligibility criteria. Not everyone qualifies for an NHS vaccination — if you don't, you may be able to have yours privately (see below).
Free NHS flu vaccination
For the 2026/27 season, NHS flu vaccination is offered to groups including:
- Adults aged 65 and over
- Adults aged 18 to under 65 in an eligible clinical risk group (certain long-term conditions)
- Pregnant women
- People living in long-stay residential care homes
- Carers in receipt of Carer's Allowance, or the main carer of an older or disabled person
- Close contacts of people with a weakened immune system
- Frontline health and social care workers (where not covered by their employer)
Children are also eligible for NHS flu vaccination. New for this flu season, our pharmacy can now offer the free NHS childhood flu vaccination to eligible children — see Children’s flu vaccination below. Our pharmacy team provides NHS flu vaccinations for eligible adults and children.
Free NHS COVID-19 vaccination
NHS COVID-19 eligibility is more limited. For autumn 2026 it is offered to:
- Adults aged 75 and over
- Residents in care homes for older adults
- People aged 6 months and over with a weakened immune system (for example due to certain treatments or conditions)
If you are under 75 and not immunosuppressed, you are generally not eligible for an NHS COVID-19 vaccination this season — but you may be able to have one privately.
Children’s flu vaccination
This flu season, our pharmacy can offer the free NHS childhood flu vaccination to eligible children — so you may be able to have your child vaccinated with us, rather than waiting for a GP or school session.
Which children can have it?
The free NHS childhood flu vaccination is offered to:
- Children aged 2 and 3 years (age on 31 August 2026)
- Children aged 4 to 17 years who are in a clinical (“at-risk”) group
- Children from Reception to Year 11 who missed their flu vaccination at school (catch-up)
Some other groups are also covered. If you’re not sure whether your child is eligible, just ask our pharmacy team — we’re happy to check.
What to expect
- Usually given as a quick, needle-free nasal spray — suitable for most children
- An injected flu vaccine is available if the nasal spray isn’t suitable for your child
- A parent or guardian gives consent, and our pharmacist checks it’s suitable for your child first
- Free on the NHS for eligible children
Childhood flu vaccination is subject to eligibility, a clinical assessment and vaccine availability. Children under 2, and some children with particular health needs, may be best vaccinated by their GP surgery — our pharmacist will advise on the right option for your child.
Not eligible for an NHS vaccination?
If you are not eligible for an NHS vaccination, you may be able to have your vaccination privately. Our pharmacist will assess your suitability before vaccinating, subject to availability.
